Search Insights utilizes Searchspring's search tracking data, while also analyzing some supplemental Google Analytics data to present important metrics breakdowns for searches performed on your site. You can use this report to analyze how shoppers are interacting with the various search queries on your site, and you can take action directly from this report.
Known Issues / Caveats
- There are some cases where Google Analytics doesn't return all the data we ask for. We saw this in one case where Page Value was off because we weren't getting a specific casing of a search query from GA, even when maxing out the GA request limit.
- Because we only fetch 5,000 rows of GA data, sometimes a specific casing with lower numbers of unique views may be dropped in our aggregations. Even if we increased it to Google's max of 10,000, this would sometimes happen.
- “dress” (with 100 views) is row 1 of the data we get from GA
- “Dress” (with 50 views) is row 4,900
- “DRESS” (with 2 views) is row 5,002
Date Range
The date selector at the top right of the page is used to change the range of dates for which you'd like to view details of this report. This reporting can be viewed up to two years back from the current date.
Search Insights offer insights for 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or a custom date range. Simply click the calendar icon to select your date range, then click the “Update” button. If you choose “Custom”, you will need to define the date range per your preferences.
Breakdown
Breakdown gives you a view of the requests made, total unique searches, and and number of products associated with the Search Query for a selected date range.
The Requests column shows how many times the Search API was hit. For example, if you perform a search for “socks”, select the color filter for "blue", and then navigate to a second page of results, the system counts this as three requests. Thus, this column accounts for each initial page load, any filter selection, and any additional page navigation.
The Total Unique Searches value is recorded once per session for each search performed, regardless of the number of times the search is viewed within that session. Whether a single session included one search for this query or twenty searches, this will still be counted as a single Unique Search.

Over what time period are the search results? 7 days? 30 days?
Hi Becca Romero, Search Insights offer insights for 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or a custom date range. We have updated the article to include this information. Please feel free to submit a ticket if you have any additional questions or run into any issues.
What do you mean by Requests? Does that mean every time anyone searches for a keyword it is considered a request, then Unique Searches are unique customers?
Hi Brad Schacht,
The Requests column will show how many times the Search API was hit. For example, if you perform a search for “socks”, then select the color filter for blue, and navigate to a second page of results, it would count as three requests. So essentially, this column accounts for each initial page load, any filter selection, and any additional page navigation.
The Total Unique Searches is recorded once per session for each search performed, regardless of the number of times the search is viewed within that session. Whether a single session included one search for this query or twenty searches, it will still be counted as a single Unique Search.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to submit a ticket if you have any additional questions or run into any issues.
