To deliver a seamless omnichannel experience, merchants need to know not just how much stock they have, but where it is located.
Standard tracking combines all warehouse and storefront stock into a single total. Per-location inventory tracking breaks this down, mapping your available stock to its specific location (e.g., {"Denver": 10, "Toronto": 4}). This granular data allows you to build location-aware storefront experiences.
Key benefits
There are several intrinsic benefits of this feature:
- Location-based search: Filter search results to only show products available at a customer's nearest store.
- In-store pickup: Display real-time, per-location stock availability directly on product pages.
- Targeted sorting: Prioritize and boost locally in-stock products higher in search and category results.
How it works
These features make location-specific tracking invaluable:
- Explicit mapping: Each product variant carries a detailed stock breakdown by location. Locations with zero stock are explicitly tracked so you can differentiate "out of stock" from "not carried."
- Shopify sync: Inventory is mapped using the exact location names configured in your Shopify admin.
- Performance guardrails: To protect indexing speeds and payload sizes, you can track a maximum of 10 distinct locations at a time.
Note: Tracking multiple locations increases the data size per product. For very large catalogs, this can noticeably increase full re-index times.
Configuring location tracking
This feature can be enabled in the Searchspring management console within Data\Data Feed\Shopify under the Data Attribute Settings heading.
